Turning 16 and getting a driver’s license is an exciting time in a teenager’s life. However, the freedom that comes along with this excitement is not to be taken lightly. The responsibility that comes along with operating a vehicle is one that many teenagers have not experienced prior to getting their driver’s license. Below are some driving tips to keep new drivers safe on the road.
Obey the rules of the road: Driving is a privilege, not a right. If you do not follow the rules of the road, you can get your license suspended. Speeding, not stopping at stoplights or stop signs, illegally passing, driving under the influence, and driving distracted can all lead to tickets, fines, or a crash. Driving a car is a huge responsibility, which is not to be taken lightly.
No texting and driving: Texting is number one on the list of distractions for young drivers. Texting is also one of the lead causes of car accidents in the United States. In order to prevent this, make rules for yourself in regards to cell-phone use while driving. If you need to make a phone call or respond to a text, pull over or have one of your passengers use the phone for you. There is no text that cannot wait until you’ve reached your destination or pulled your car over. Nothing is more important than your life.
Be aware: Being aware of your surroundings while you are driving can make the difference between you and your passengers arriving home safely or not. Having good defensive driving skills will help you to be aware of anything that may come your way. Whether it is a poor driver, a deer in the road, or poor road conditions, you will be prepared for whatever comes your way because you are paying attention to the road.
Maintain your vehicle: Learning about and maintaining your vehicle is an important part of driving. Keeping your vehicle mechanically sound through preventative maintenance will help it last a lot longer. Who doesn’t want their first car to last through their teens?
