Tips on How to Get the Most Out of Your Gas Tank & Save on Fuel Costs

Driving is a huge privilege that we used to take advantage of but now, because of fuel cost increases, driving is becoming more and more of luxury. Long car travels are set aside, people decide to stop driving and gas prices get in the way of life in many other ways. Jiffy Lube is here to save you money by providing some tips to keep your car from guzzling as much gas.

Drive Sensibly – Aggressive driving habits like speeding, rapid acceleration and rapid braking waste gas. Try to ease into stopping and accelerating, and when you’re on the highway use cruise control to help you keep a constant speed. As for speeding, keep in mind that a typical car’s gas mileage will decrease rapidly at speeds above 50 mph.

Avoid Excessive Idling – Keeping your car in park and running for a long time is a huge gas waste, yet so is turning your car on and off excessively. So what do you do? If you know you are going to be turning it on again in a minute or two then keep your car running, if it’ll be awhile, turn it off. Two minutes of idling takes the same amount of fuel as driving one mile would.

Remove Excess Weight – Remove all unnecessary items from your vehicle. This could be a huge and simple money saver. For example, ridding your car of 100 pounds could increase your MPG by up to 2 percent. Remember that this affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.

Limit Using Air Conditioning – Blasting the air conditioning can be just like tossing money out the window. However driving on the highway with the windows down can cause resistance, forcing your car to work harder and use more fuel. You should use air conditioning on as low of a setting as possible, and when going slow, turn it off and roll the windows down.

Use Overdrive Gears – Using your overdrive gears as much as possible can help you save gas money because they make your engine work only as hard as it has to in order to get the job done.  You should be on a lower gear when climbing hills and on overdrive when on flat surfaces.

Keep Your Fuel System Healthy– The fuel system increases power and acceleration, improves idling and air flow and provides quicker starting. When there are issues with your fuel system your engine has to work harder to perform, causing it to use up more fuel than a normal fuel system would. Have a professional check out your fuel system to see if it needs to be cleaned or if your fuel filter needs to be replaced.

Keep Tires Inflated – Tires with the proper pressure and inflation will not only make for a smoother, long ride but will save you gas money. You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure.

Plan Ahead – Know how to get to your destination ahead of time because driving around lost will only cost you more money and time. You can also plan ahead by taking note of the cheapest gas stations and finding the closest of everything – grocery stories, gyms, banks; you’d be surprised how much money you can save by doing some research.
